Client preparing for laser hair removal treatment in Palm Beach

Whether you're preparing for your very first laser hair removal appointment or beginning treatment in a new area, proper preparation plays an important role in achieving safe, effective results.

As a seasoned laser hair removal specialist, I've found that the best outcomes begin long before the laser is ever turned on. Small steps taken before your appointment can improve treatment effectiveness, reduce unnecessary irritation, and help ensure a smoother overall experience.

At Renew Laser & Aesthetics in Palm Beach Gardens, every client receives personalized pre-treatment instructions based on their skin type, hair characteristics, medical history, and treatment goals. The following guidelines reflect many of the recommendations I provide during consultations.

Why Preparation Matters

Laser hair removal works by delivering light energy into the pigment within the hair follicle. The energy is absorbed by actively growing hairs, helping reduce future hair growth while protecting the surrounding skin.

When the skin is properly prepared, treatments are generally more comfortable and effective.

Proper preparation may also reduce the likelihood of unnecessary skin irritation and help your provider safely select the most appropriate treatment settings.

1. Shave the Treatment Area 24 Hours Before Your Appointment

One of the most common questions clients ask is:

"Should I shave before laser hair removal?"

The answer is yes.

Shaving approximately 24 hours before your appointment removes surface hair while leaving the hair follicle beneath the skin intact. This allows the laser to effectively target the follicle without excess hair above the skin absorbing unnecessary energy.

Avoid shaving immediately before your appointment if your skin tends to become irritated.

2. Avoid Waxing, Tweezing, or Threading

Laser hair removal requires an intact hair follicle.

Waxing, tweezing, threading, and epilating remove the follicle that the laser is designed to treat.

If you've recently waxed or tweezed, you may need to wait until sufficient hair has returned before treatment can begin.

Shaving between appointments is perfectly acceptable and is often encouraged.

3. Limit Sun Exposure Before Treatment

Healthy, untanned skin is generally the ideal canvas for laser hair removal.

Excessive sun exposure or recent tanning can increase skin sensitivity and may require postponing treatment until your skin has returned to its natural tone.

Living in South Florida, I recommend clients:

  • Wear sunscreen daily.

  • Avoid intentional tanning.

  • Protect treated areas with clothing when possible.

  • Inform your provider if you've recently spent significant time outdoors or on vacation.

4. Arrive with Clean Skin

On the day of your appointment, the treatment area should be free of:

  • Makeup

  • Self-tanner

  • Lotion

  • Oils

  • Deodorant (when treating the underarms)

  • Fragrances

Clean skin helps ensure optimal contact between the laser and the treatment area.

5. Tell Your Provider About New Medications

Some medications can increase skin sensitivity to light.

Always let your provider know if you've recently started:

  • Certain antibiotics

  • Prescription acne medications

  • Photosensitizing medications

  • Herbal supplements that may increase light sensitivity

Your consultation is the perfect opportunity to review any medical changes before treatment.

6. Avoid Skin Irritation Before Your Appointment

If the treatment area is sunburned, actively irritated, or experiencing an active skin infection, treatment may need to be rescheduled.

Allow your skin time to fully recover before laser treatment.

7. Follow Your Personalized Treatment Plan

Every client is different.

Treatment recommendations vary based on:

  • Hair color

  • Hair thickness

  • Skin type

  • Hormonal influences

  • Previous hair removal methods

  • Treatment area

Your provider should develop a treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What to Expect After Treatment

Most clients experience mild redness around the treated follicles. This is a normal response and often resolves within several hours.

Following your appointment, your provider may recommend:

  • Applying cool compresses if needed

  • Avoiding excessive heat for the remainder of the day

  • Wearing sunscreen on exposed treatment areas

  • Moisturizing as directed

  • Avoiding picking or exfoliating treated hairs as they naturally shed

As always, follow the individualized post-treatment instructions provided during your appointment.

Common Questions

Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes. Shaving is encouraged when needed. Avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading between treatments.

Can I work out after laser hair removal?

Many clients can return to normal daily activities right away. Depending on the treatment area and your skin's response, your provider may recommend avoiding vigorous exercise or excessive heat for 48 hours.

Can I wear makeup after facial laser hair removal?

If the skin is calm, mineral makeup may be appropriate after treatment. Follow your provider's recommendations based on your individual response.

How many treatments will I need?

Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are typically needed to achieve the best long-term reduction. Your treatment plan will be customized based on your individual goals and hair growth patterns.
