Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Appointment

Considering electrolysis in Palm Beach Gardens? Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions about permanent hair removal, treatment, preparation, aftercare, pricing, safety, and expected results at Renew Laser & Aesthetics.

Is electrolysis permanent?

Yes. Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. It permanently destroys individual hair follicles in the active growth phase so they can no longer produce hair. Because dormant follicles can become active over time due to hormones or other biological changes, additional treatments may be needed until every actively growing follicle has been treated.

How does electrolysis work?

Electrolysis uses a very fine sterile probe inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle. A precise electrical current permanently destroys the follicle, allowing the hair to be removed without damaging the surrounding skin.

Am I a good candidate for electrolysis?

Electrolysis is appropriate for all skin tones, all hair colors, and all hair types, including blonde, gray, white, and red hairs that cannot be effectively treated with laser hair removal. Your consultation includes an assessment of your hair growth, medical history, medications, and treatment goals.

Is electrolysis better than laser hair removal?

Neither treatment is universally better—they serve different purposes. Laser hair removal is ideal for reducing large amounts of dark hair, while electrolysis permanently removes individual hairs regardless of color. Many patients achieve the best long-term results by combining both treatments.

Does electrolysis hurt?

Most patients describe electrolysis as a brief heat or pinching sensation. Comfort varies depending on the treatment area, hair density, and individual sensitivity.

How many electrolysis treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the treatment area, hair density, hormones, genetics, and previous hair removal methods. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple appointments are necessary to permanently treat every follicle during its active growth phase.

How long does each appointment take?

Appointment length depends on the size of the treatment area and the amount of hair being treated. Sessions may range from 15 minutes to one hour or longer depending on your treatment plan.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Stay well hydrated, avoid excessive sun exposure, and arrive with clean skin free of lotions, oils, makeup, or self-tanner on the treatment area. Hair should be visible for treatment, so avoid shaving unless instructed otherwise.

Should I shave, wax, tweeze, or thread before electrolysis?

Do not wax, tweeze, or thread before treatment because the hair root must be present for permanent removal. If shaving is appropriate for your treatment area, you'll receive personalized instructions during your consultation.

Can I wear makeup or lotion to my appointment?

The treatment area should be clean and free of makeup, lotions, oils, deodorant, perfumes, and self-tanner before treatment.

What happens during an electrolysis treatment?

Each hair follicle is treated individually using a sterile probe and precise electrical current. The treated hair is then gently removed with forceps. Depending on the treatment area, multiple hairs may be permanently treated during each visit.

What should I expect after treatment?

Temporary redness and mild swelling are common and typically resolve within several hours. Most patients return to normal daily activities immediately while following simple aftercare instructions.

Can I exercise after electrolysis?

To minimize irritation, avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas, swimming pools, and excessive heat for the first 48 hours after treatment.

Can I go in the sun after electrolysis?

Avoid excessive sun exposure immediately after treatment and protect the treated area with sunscreen once the skin has recovered.

Is electrolysis safe?

Yes. When performed by an experienced licensed electrologist using sterile equipment and proper technique, electrolysis has an excellent safety profile. Every consultation includes an assessment to determine whether treatment is appropriate.

How much does electrolysis cost?

Electrolysis is priced according to treatment time. Pricing begins at $40 per 15-minute session.
